Meet Layla Brady: Tradeswoman & Business Owner

Headshot of a woman

What does Empowering Women mean to you?

It means; encouraging, supporting, and inspiring women in all aspects of life. At the end of the day, we are all women in all walks of life just trying to build a better future for ourselves

How did you get started working in your field?

When I was 23 years old, I started learning how to paint my crappy apartment. Then at 24 years old, I worked for a construction company learning how to drywall, tape, tile, frame, do flooring, etc. A few companies over the years taught me different skills and still painting as well. After that, I started a renovation business with my ex-husband for about 5 years. We decided it didn’t work anymore, and he went to a different line of work, so I created Layla Brady Painting. I managed and cleaned commercial buildings for 10 years while my children were small, until I gained an amazing reputation as a painter in the town where I live and was able to quit and focus on my business full time

What do you love most about your job? / What are you most proud of?

I meet some amazing clients and have a great tool collection. I am proud of where I am today in my business and the skills and knowledge I have.

What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work?

Be patient, pay attention and never stop learning new skills and ways to do stuff to better your trade.

Anything else you would like to add?

I have been in the trades for many, many years before social media was a thing. I took a lot of criticism and crap from other male workers. But I worked hard and really focused on building my skills and relationships with clients, and today, I have a successful small painting business. Networking is everything.
