What does Empowering Women mean to you?
Even though the world has evolved significantly over the last thirty years and women are generally more respected, I believe that the day-to-day support we show one another remains as essential as ever. This support can take many forms—whether it’s in the workplace, on a personal level, or through legislative changes that help level the playing field. Ensuring that women have equal opportunities to shape their futures and make their voices heard isn’t just a goal; it’s a necessity. I grew up around strong, compassionate women who embodied resilience and empathy, and they instilled these qualities in me. Passing on these values to future generations is so important, giving them the confidence and foundation to stand boldly and authentically as themselves.
By continuing to empower each other, we’re not just supporting individual growth—we’re fostering a legacy of strength and empathy for those who will follow.
How did you get started working in your field?
Today, I’m the proud owner of KAK Art & Designs, my own art and graphic design business, which I built from a lifelong passion that’s brought me to where I am now-despite many challenges along the way. When I was five, my mother gave me my first watercolor set. Because I was severely physically disabled, I couldn’t take part in many of the activities my friends did. I was bored, and my parents were constantly trying to find things I could do. I immediately fell in love with painting. I obliterated that paint set within a week and asked for more. From there, my parents enrolled me in every art class I could take, and the rest is history!
What do you love most about your job? / What are you most proud of?
What I love most about my work is seeing how my art touches people. I’m definitely a people-pleaser, and if I have the ability to make someone smile just by looking at a painting, I think that is pretty cool. The world is full of so much angst and anger, and if my art can be a source of joy, then I know I’ve done my job. I love the connections it allows me to make and all of the people I get to meet through my art. It has definitely opened up my world.
What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work?
Nothing in life worth doing is easy. Being a professional artist and owning/running a business is hard work, and you are “on” nearly 24/7. But at the end of the day, it brings a sense of fulfillment like nothing else can, and that makes all of that hard work worth it. I’d also tell people that sometimes it’s important to take calculated risks, and it’s okay to fail. In fact, at some point it’s inevitable. But as long as you learn from your mistakes, adjust your process and continue to put yourself out there, you’re going to be okay. It may take some time, but it all will work out eventually.
Anything else you would like to add?
As an artist, business owner, and public speaker, I’m often reminded that my journey has been shaped not just by my passion for art, but by the challenges I’ve overcome along the way. Living with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), or brittle bone disease, has meant that my life has been marked by physical obstacles, but it’s also shaped the resilient and determined mindset that drives me every day. By the time I was 10, my parents had stopped counting the more than 500 bones I had broken. But through all of that, I was never taught to feel sorry for myself. My parents taught me the value of perseverance, positivity, and finding my own strength, no matter the circumstances.
Being a woman living with a disability in a world that often underestimates you comes with its challenges, but it also brings incredible empowerment. It’s about embracing your unique perspective, owning your story, and not letting anyone define what you're capable of. That’s why I’m so passionate about empowering other women, especially those who face adversity, to see their own potential. Whether it’s through my art, my business, or speaking at colleges, conferences, and schools, I aim to show that no matter where you start, your journey is yours to shape, and you have the power to make something incredible out of it.
Owning my own business, KAK Art & Designs, has been a way for me to prove that with resilience, support, and a commitment to staying positive, we can accomplish anything. Every day, I’m inspired by the strength and determination of the women around me. I’ve learned that empowering women isn't just about offering support; it’s about lifting each other up, sharing knowledge, and inspiring confidence—because when one woman succeeds, it's a path for all of us to succeed.
