In the male-dominated world of construction and welding, trailblazers like DeIla Ray are breaking barriers and setting new standards. Her journey, fueled by grit, passion, and a desire to uplift others, has transformed her from a traveling welder to an influential industry leader, educator, and advocate. DeIla embodies the spirit of Rosie the Riveter—not just in action but as a personal philosophy she wears, quite literally, on her sleeve. During #EmpoweringWomen2024 we envisioned and celebrated the ‘Modern Day Rosie’ and DeIla is the epitome of that representation.
The Journey to Empowerment and Growth
DeIla’s career saw a turning point in 2019 when she connected with the Empowering Women in Industry community. What began as a chance encounter on social media sharing a post about recognizing tradeswomen, evolved into a life-changing network of support. “Empowering Women in Industry has helped the inner fierce girl that I knew I was to now shine boldly on the outside with the confidence to lead,” she reflects. With each step forward, DeIla refined her skills, earned industry certifications, and accumulated numerous accolades—such as Tradeswoman of the Year in 2020 and Emerging Leader of the Year in 2023.
Her rapid rise also reflects her belief in the power of mentorship and learning. From welding in the field to joining organizations like the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), DeIla has continuously leveled up. As she puts it, “You never stop learning.”
Challenges and Triumphs: Overcoming Bias and Stereotypes
Navigating a male-populated industry wasn’t without its challenges. DeIla candidly admits that when she first started welding, she wondered if she could make it. With no formal background, she had to learn on the job from seasoned welders. “Being adaptable and quick to pick up new skills helped me advance,” she explains, adding that it ignited her passion and drive to explore how far she could go.
Now, as both a mentor and an educator, DeIla challenges stereotypes by being a living example of what’s possible. “When I lay the first bead in the welding booth, my male students immediately realize that women can be badass welders too,” she says with pride. She also highlights the growing presence of women in welding, sharing that her program now has 12 female students—an encouraging increase compared to the 3-4 just a few years ago.
For industries aiming to foster more inclusive environments, DeIla stresses the importance of early exposure to the trades. “Representation matters,” she says. “The sooner young people see women excelling in these fields, the more it sparks dreams that they can follow.”
Her advice for women facing similar challenges is clear:
Build a Strong Network: Connect with other women in your industry and seek out mentors who can provide guidance and support.
Develop Your Skills: Continuously invest in your professional development to stay ahead of the curve and demonstrate your value.
Be Assertive: Don't be afraid to speak up for yourself and advocate for your career goals.
Find a Supportive Team: Seek out a team or department where you feel valued and respected.
Embrace Your Uniqueness: Leverage your unique perspectives and experiences to contribute to your team and organization.
Igniting a Path for Others
One of DeIla’s proudest career moments came when she completed a monumental welding project for a wastewater treatment facility. Alone, she welded over 500 feet of pipe—some with her non-dominant hand and others using a mirror—proving her technical prowess under pressure. “All of my welds passed the inspection. It was a defining moment where I knew I could take on anything,” she recalls. This accomplishment cemented her belief that no obstacle was insurmountable.
DeIla sees herself not just as a leader but as a spark for others. “If they can see her, they can be her,” she says, embodying a mantra that underscores her mission to pave the way for future generations of women in trades. “My last five years have been my explosion era. I have endless fuel in my fire, and I’m using it to blaze a path for the women coming next.”
Rosie’s Influence: A Legacy of Strength and Empowerment
As someone who found inspiration in the iconic image of Rosie the Riveter, DeIla has taken that connection to heart—literally. “I have a rendition of Rosie tattooed on my right forearm,” she shares proudly. The tattoo serves as a constant reminder of women’s capability and strength. “When someone recognizes who I have tattooed on me, it’s a moment of pride.”
Through her journey, DeIla has had the privilege of connecting with some of the original “Rosies” who entered the workforce during World War II. “These women are trailblazers who paved the way for women like me. With honor, I carry that torch and work every day to pass it on to others,” she says. The legacy of Rosie the Riveter is alive and well in DeIla’s work, reminding us that the spirit of “We Can Do It” continues to inspire across generations.
The Road Ahead: New Goals and New Dreams
DeIla’s journey is far from over. As a welding instructor, she’s working toward her Educator Certification while maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA. Next summer, she plans to enroll in the Certified Welding Educator and Certified Welding Inspector programs at the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology. With each goal she checks off her list, five more appear, and she welcomes the challenge.
“The future of the world is in my shop and classroom,” DeIla says with conviction. Her focus now is on igniting the dreams of her students, helping them see their potential, and guiding them toward achieving their own success. “This next phase of my career is about being that source of ignition for others.”
A Modern-Day Rosie Leading with Fire and Passion
DeIla Ray’s story is one of resilience, passion, and relentless pursuit of excellence. In a world that still grapples with stereotypes and gender biases, she stands as a beacon of inspiration—not just for women in welding, but for anyone seeking to break barriers and create meaningful change. Her journey is a testament to the fact that with the right mindset, support, and determination, anything is possible.
For DeIla, igniting inspiration isn’t just a theme—it’s a way of life. Whether she’s mentoring students, taking on complex projects, or leading through advocacy, she reminds us that every challenge is an opportunity to grow. As she puts it: “There isn’t an obstacle I can’t overcome.”
With each weld she lays and every person she inspires, DeIla carries the torch lit by the original Rosies and keeps it burning brightly for the next generation. And in doing so, she shows us all that the fire of inspiration is unstoppable.
